Feeding a newborn: the first weeks are the hardest
Whether you breastfeed, bottle-feed or both, the early weeks are a learning curve. What is normal, and where to get help before it becomes a crisis.
Reviewed against WHO Guidelines, 1 min read, published

Newborns feed often — many times a day, at intervals that make no concession to your sleep. That frequency is normal, and it is not a verdict on your supply.
When to ask for help
Mothers and families need to be supported to breastfeed.
Watch the outputs, not the clock
Steady wet and dirty nappies and a baby gaining weight tell you more than any schedule.
However you end up feeding your baby, you have not failed at anything. Fed is the outcome; the route there is yours to choose and to change.
Quick summary
- Often: newborns feed many times a day, and that is normal
- If it hurts: ask for hands-on help early
- Watch: wet and dirty nappies and weight gain, not the clock
- However you feed: you have not failed at anything
